Jón Atli Benediktsson

Jon Atli Benediktsson received the Cand.Sci. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Iceland, Reykjavik, in 1984, and the M.S.E.E. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN, in 1987 and 1990, respectively. Since 1991 Dr. Benediktsson has been with the University of Iceland and Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering since 1996. He was the President and Rector of the University of Iceland 2015-2025 and President of Aurora Universities 2020-2024.

Dr. Benediktsson has been on the Clarivate Analytics list of Highly Cited Researchers since 2018. His research interests are in remote sensing, biomedical analysis of signals, pattern recognition, image processing, and signal processing, and he has published extensively in those fields. Dr. Benediktsson is International Member of National Academy of Engineering, Fellow of IEEE, Fellow of SPIE, member of Academy Europe, SigmaXi and Tau Beta Pi. He was granted the IEEE Third Millennium Medal (2000) and received the Outstanding Service Award from the IEEE Geoscience  and Remote Sensing Society (2007). Dr. Benediktsson was co-recipient of the 2012 IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing Paper Award and in 2013 and 2024 he was corecipient of the IEEE GRSS Highest Impact Paper Award.

About the Role of the Editor-in-Chief

The IEEE Press Editor-in-Chief is responsible for overseeing the editorial board and chairing annual board meetings. The Editor-in-Chief works with IEEE Press staff, Wiley staff and members of the IEEE Press Editorial Board to identify potential book projects and is the final authority on acceptance or rejection of manuscripts. The Editor-in-Chief also represents the IEEE Press Editorial Board on the IEEE Publication Services and Products Board (PSPB).
